Hainanese Western Sampling Set

Much has been said about Hainanese Chicken Rice but do you know in terms of Singapore local food, the Hainanese has contributed much to the diversity that is unique in the world?

The Hainanese Western is the result of Hainanese Immigrants working in western  households as chefs and cooks and came out with dishes that are now local favourites that we cannot do without.

The Wanderful Singapore group now works with British Hainan to bring you this special sampling set so you can the best Hainanese dishes not easily available in Hawker Centers.

The Hainanese Story

The Hainanese are a Chinese dialect group that originated in Hainan province, China and are the fifth-largest Chinese dialect group in Singapore. In 2010, the Hainanese made up less than 7% of the Chinese population in Singapore, or more than 170,000 people.

The Hainanese arrived in Singapore around 1841, later than other Chinese dialect groups. They primarily worked as servants and chefs for the British colonial masters. Most Hainanese lived around Beach Road, Seah Street, and Purvis Street, which became the center of their social and commercial activities conveniently located next to the iconic Raffles Hotel.
